At Redgate Primary Academy, we ensure all children have the opportunity to learn and develop in a supportive and caring environment, in which there is a focus on recognising individual achievement and supporting progression with the right level of stretch and challenge, to support children in reaching their full potential.

We acknowledge that our children rarely follow a predictable developmental journey, as their learning can often be idiosyncratic and as such, our teaching is reflective of this.

The curriculum offer is child led, relevant, meaningful and offers a flexible approach allowing their needs to be met.

“It shouldn’t matter how slowly a child learns, as long as we are encouraging them not to stop.” (Robert John Meehan)

Communication is at the core of our curriculum, promoting social, moral, spiritual and cultural development, as well as intellectual and physical development. It is essential that our children have opportunities to develop functional skills as well as independence.

Our curriculum has three pathways, with children following the most appropriate pathway for their level of learning. Our flexible approach, means they can mix and match different elements of the pathways to keep their curriculum offer ambitious.

The curriculum is planned to provide continuity and progression, enabling children to make connections and transfer skills, to think creatively and solve problems. It also develops children’s capacity to work independently and collaboratively.

Our children learn best when they have access to hands on learning, where they learn skills that are relevant and appropriate to them. Children need many opportunities to learn and practice their skills in different contexts, repetition is key to their development and our approach. To keep the content interesting, relevant and varied we follow a thematic approach over a 3-year cycle.

Our curriculum supports and enables our children to be happy, resilient and independent and have a voice which is listened to. It raises their aspirations through a supportive culture and environment, built on trusting relationships. Our children are empowered, which prepares them for their next steps in education.
